Verizon Wireless
Verizon offers several international calling plans that are customizable according to one’s individual needs. Generally, international cell phone rates start at about twenty cents per minute with this company. However, if one wishes to use his or her international calling features frequently, then there is a more cost-effective plan available with Verizon. With Verizon’s “International Long Distance Value Plan,” the user is charged an additional four dollars per month, but the cost per minute for international calls is reduced to a starting fee of just six cents. This “Value Plan” is an excellent consideration for people who wish to make frequent calls outside of the United States.

Tracfone
Tracfone is one of the nation’s most recognized prepaid cell phone service providers. With Tracfone, users do not have to sign any contracts or pay a monthly fee, but per-minute prices generally are a bit more expensive than those that can be obtained with contracted programs. However, Tracfone does not charge any additional fee to make long-distance calls as opposed to making calls within the country. If one does not use his or her cell phone very often, this can be an excellent deal. Generally, one can purchase 60 minutes for about twenty dollars, although Tracfone offers many bonus codes which add more minutes at no extra cost.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s special international calling plans are not as cost-effective as some of its competitors. However, some of its base rates for calls made to individual countries are lower than other cell phone providers (for instance, calls to South America can be made for about seventeen cents per minute). This is ideal for people who only wish to make occasional international calls.
AT&T
Like Verizon, AT&T offers a special international calling plan designed for people who frequently make worldwide calls. After paying an additional fee of $3.99 per month, the user can enjoy discounted international calling fees throughout the entire world. Generally, AT&T’s international calling rates are a few cents higher than those offered by Verizon, but AT&T offers a much better selection of countries to which one can make calls. Depending on the specific country that one wishes to call, AT&T’s plan may or may not be the most cost-effective.
Sprint
Sprint’s international cell phone plans are comparable to those of AT&T and Verizon. With an additional charge of $4 per month, one can make discounted calls to a number of different countries. However, the best deal to be found with Sprint is its Mexico calling plan. With this plan, one can call Mexico at just five cents per minute after paying an extra five dollars per month.
